Take a bath with the hues and textures of Provence surrounding you, or travel to Tuscany every time you enter your dining room.

Your imagination will be the only limit for the quality and appearance that American Clay can provide to your next project

Why Use American Clay Plaster?

Environmentally Responsible Beauty

American Clay is a 100% natural earth plaster, providing an environment that is wholesome for your friends and family. A unique combination of clays, aggregates and natural pigments are used to create the colors and textures that make American Clay a natural choice for warmth and beauty. With low inherent energy used during the manufacturing process and less waste in production and application, American Clay was created out of a commitment to the environment and the future.

Inherent Quality

Clay naturally controls climate by regulating arid and humid air, absorbing and releasing moisture in response to environmental changes. Warm to the touch in winter and surprisingly cool in summer, American Clay creates a wall surface that is inviting to the senses.

Can be painted, stained or plastered over • Absorbs sound • Flexible - workable until sealed • Breathable • Does not need to be sealed • No dusting • Non-toxic - non chemical • Easy to use easy on hands.

Application

Clayote can be applied to almost any wall surface including drywall, adobe, straw bale, masonry, and wood. Minimal preparation is required. Standard plastering techniques are used for application and it is easy to install even with minimal experience.

1. In a bucket add approximately eight quarts of water per 50 lbs of material and mix with a paddle mixer. If the material is too stiff to easily apply 1/16 of an inch to surface, add more water to achieve desired consistency.

2. Apply using traditional toweling techniques used by plasterers for centuries. The recommended application is two thin coats. The second coat is toweled to the final surface desired.

3. As the clay starts to dry it begins to harden, and some shrinkage cracks will appear where the plaster was applied thicker. As this starts to happen continue to work the surface with a trowel, hard rubber float or sponge. Each will provide a unique final texture.

4. After this is finished allow the material to dry for approximately 8 -10 hours depending on atmospheric conditions. Avoid direct drafts or intense heat because they may cause excessive cracking. If cracks do appear they can easily be smoothed out by lightly wetting the surface and smooth using a trowel, hard rubber float or sponge to achieve the final surface texture.

Repeat step 4 until the desired effect is achieved. The more hard troweling that is utilized the smoother and more mottled the effect.

Now available in two distinct formulations

LOMA

Formerly called ‘Clayote’ Our original formulation which has the characteristics of traditional plaster. You can vary the surface texture by using different finishing techniques. Using a tile sponge you can achieve a ‘sanded’ finish which is reminiscent of suede. If you use a stainless steel swimming pool trowel, you can have a smooth—but somewhat textured surface. A ‘skip-trowel’ finish can be produced by laying up the first coat as a ‘sanded’ finish described above—. Allow this to dry. Spritz the surface with a ‘garden’ sprayer and lay up a second 1/16th inch coat of LOMA –---and then toweling on the second coat leaving spaces-- revealing the under texture. Adding a coarse black sand to the Loma can produce an almost ‘stone-like’ quality to the surface.

PORCELINA

Our new Venetian-like, super-smooth product which gives a satin—almost texture-free surface. Prized by Artisans for centuries, the smooth surface can be reminiscent of fine marble. Toweled over a basecoat of LOMA—PORCELINA is a layer less than 1/16th of an inch. It can be worked with several colors to produce the mottled, Venetian plaster of Mediterranean and Italian villas. Burnishing this plaster requires no sanding between coats.  It can be sealed with our clear sealer, gloss sealer, or carnauba clear wax.

Now, you have to realize, that the sample colors above do not even begin to describe what the plaster really looks like on a wall, and the color can't be shown in it's beauty either because the plaster when it is on the wall winds up with an explosion of textures and color variations that these swatches can't begin to approach. If you really want to see this product the best way would be to visit our showroom. Second best would be the color sample board.

CLAY PRIMER

The American Clay Primer is specially formulated to keep the breath ability of the surface, reducing the possibility of mold build-up. We note that the primer serves as the perfect base for our Earth Plasters over almost all surfaces. In Rastra, PerformWall and ICF buildings, the primer by itself does not afford the full impact resistance required for those relatively ‘soft’ materials.

Surfaces that need brown coats of cement, lime, or a site-based earth plaster to increase the strength of the wall surface:

Light Clay
Foam Building Form Block
Rastra or Perform Wall
Straw Bale

Surfaces that need no priming

These materials listed below do not require priming IF they meet all three of the following requirements

1. they are unsealed
2. water misted onto the surface soaks immediately into the base
3. they have a sharp tooth or sharp texture to them

If the surface fails one or more of these above requirements, it must be primed.

AAC (aerated autoclaved concrete)
adobe
blueboard, plasterboard, Imperial Board, or cementboard (these surfaces do not require taping and mudding)
cement stucco
cob
concrete block (concrete masonry units)
earth plaster
gypsum plaster (sand finish or brown coat)
lime plaster
masonry (tile or brick)
monolithic concrete
stone

Surfaces that need priming:

painted surfaces
sealed or slick ( smooth) surfaces
drywall (taping and mudding also required)
joint compound
perlited gypsum plasters (e.g. Structo-Lite ™, Gypsolite™)

PENETRATING SEALER

CLEAR Our penetrating sealer is a low VOC(25mg/liter) sealer which provides a Matte finish to our plasters in a single coat. It also provides some water resistance for behind sinks, tub-surrounds (not in direct water sprays).

A double or triple spray of this sealer provides a hard, semi-gloss finish.

PRICE: 1 Gallon $30.97

PRICE: 5 Gallon $135.97

GLOSS SEALER

Like our Clear Sealer, our gloss sealer has very low VOC s. The Gloss sealer provides added protection in high traffic areas, and behind sinks or tub surrounds. It is a glossier finish, similar to a ‘red-top’ sealed plaster.

PRICE: 1 Gallon $32.97

PRICE: 5 Gallon $144.97

ADD-MIX

The American Clay Add-Mix is an addition to our LOMA or PORCELINA that prepares the Earth Plaster for high-traffic areas or commercial applications. It is added directly to the plaster while being mixed.

PRICE: 1 Gallon $33.97

PRICE: 5 Gallon $150.97
