ANTIQUE OAK, HEART PINE and OTHER FLOORING

All of our Antique Flooring is reclaimed wood coming  from the outer boards of the vintage beams from old warehouses including the Seagram's Whiskey Warehouse Complex. It has charming character defects to give the distressed look that so many designers want today.

The Seagram's Whiskey Warehouse Complex.

Here is our story behind the reclaimed Seagram's Douglas Fir, Pine and Oak.

The builders of the Seagram's Whiskey Warehouse Complex were undaunted by the limitations of the building materials that were available, and the overwhelming task that was theirs. The challenge was to have enough storage space for all of their whiskey barrels while maintaining these barrels in close proximity. The solution was a twelve level storage building with no floors. Instead of floors an intricate system of ramps allowed storage from the floor to the ceiling twelve levels up; the problem was that this timber-framed structure would tend to lean with the weight variances caused by loading one side of the building at a time.

The final design of the building called for a partially underground structure. A hole three levels deep housed the lower levels of the warehouse; the dirt removed from the hole was then packed against the upper levels of the building. This dirt supported the building from leaning to one side as that side of the warehouse was loaded with the full whiskey barrels, but it did not give enough support to hold the structure vertical against the weight that could be stacked inside. A system of plumb stations was used to ensure that the building did not lean too far. Each yellow station was painted on a vertical post with black location numbers and marking dots. A plumb bob was hung in front of each station. Inspectors would regularly check the stations and when the building leaned too far the loading of the barrels would be moved to another part of the structure. The Douglas fir that created these vertical posts has been reclaimed from the Seagram's Whiskey Warehouse and is now available through The Solar Biz; some of these posts still bear the yellow plum bob stations and other markings utilized by Seagram's.

Wood from the ramps has also been reclaimed. This oak is full of holes from the many nails and fasteners used to secure the intricate system of catwalks and ramps.

The destruction of this building unveiled a secret passage that apparently was used to roll bootleg barrels of whiskey to a location several buildings away. It is believed that this was the Rockefeller Families' prohibition whiskey supply, but you will have to verify that legend for yourself.

Wood included in our Pine, Fir and Oak lumber and Flooring products has its history in the Seagram's Whiskey Warehouse.

The perfect flooring for your home… The American spirit of endurance is truly told in the character of this antique flooring. This style has small to medium-size nail holes that are found in the top layers of large timbers that were used in the cotton warehouses of the South. The rich patina makes this a special style for paneling as well as flooring.

Antique Oak flooring shown at top-left is the most refined of our oak products. The evidence of the wood's history is limited, but may include nail holes, small bolt holes, insect tracks, enriched patina, attractive checking, remnants of weathering and more. When these elements are combined with the natural characteristics of the wood, such as attractive grain patterns, knots and color changes, a floor that fits into a multitude of uses is formed.
