The Solar Star Batteries are Dual Terminal, AGM sealed batteries. They require no maintenance, there is no corrosive spray causing the usual mess in the battery box and at the connecting cables. They are quite resistant to freezing and they have a very low self discharge rate, enabling them to sit unattended, for much longer than their wet cell counterparts.

Another great feature... for the marine market, when your boat is healed over hard, AGM batteries are unaffected by the position of the battery, unlike wet cells, in which part of the plates can rise up out of the electrolyte and hard sulfate (die) decreasing their capacity, and your investment.

Most battery dealers and the general public at large believe that an advantage of sealed AGM and Gel  batteries is the absence of explosive gasses being vented during charge. We believe this is a dangerous assumption, here's why;

Contrary to popular opinion both AGM and Gel Cell batteries can indeed out-gas hydrogen... Proper charging usually doesn't pop the vent caps open, and normally  hydrogen and oxygen are recombined in the cells. BUT... During overcharge conditions, the internal pressure of the gasses in the cell could exceed the 2 PSI limit allowing the vent seals to out-gas hydrogen... Overcharging (Equalization) which force the vented caps open can be damaging to the batteries if maintained long enough, but slight overcharges are not damaging.

So don't let 'em tell you otherwise...gel and AGM batteries do emit explosive gases! Remember you must provide sufficient ventilation to avoid concentration of hydrogen and oxygen, just as with flooded cells. To do otherwise could be risky.

In the past in order to achieve a higher amp hour bank of batteries, most folks resorted to multiple parallel connected strings of smaller batteries. This design was an expensive compromise that resulted in a drastically reduced life of the battery bank.

Parallel connected strings of the kind of batteries most folks buy are never impedance matched. This scenario makes equal charging quite difficult, resulting in bad cells in the string with the most resistance in a short amount of time, around 3.5 to 4.5 years. I think batteries are too expensive and too heavy, to have to replace in this short time period.
