As an electrical rebuilder and a battery distributor in the late 1960's Tom was approached by some students at the University of Colorado for some battery help. They were working with a very interesting device called a Solar Panel, they could get it to charge a battery during the day, it was somehow discharging the battery at night.

Tom who at that time was the owner of DC Electric Company, quickly determined that the solar panel was somewhat discharging the battery when the sun went down (this wasn't their only problem). From some spare electrical system parts, he put together a $6.00 device that incorporated a simple diode to solved their problem. This was perhaps the first charge controlling device sold in the USA to a private individual.

In the next few years solar modules were able to be purchased by the general public, and Tom was there, helping people with renewable energy products and has been ever since. With over 45 years in the battery business and over forty years experience with solar products, The Solar Biz brings to the table a very unique set of skills in designing and implementing renewable energy systems.

Tom married Barb in 1976 and they both continued to design and sell environmentally conscious products. Barb even drove a route truck delivering batteries to businesses and off grid home owners.

Combining their love of the environment and desire to live life to the fullest in the most efficient manner; they bought a parcel of land in the Gila National Forest in Southwest New Mexico, where twenty years ago they built their dream home, using creative and forward thinking designs, this 21st century home is totally off grid and extremely environmentally friendly.

Wanting to share their knowledge with the rest of the world, they set about to desin a web-site. Unable to procure the web name DCElectric.com in 2001 they acquired the domain name “TheSolar.Biz” to continue helping others to live a green friendly lifestyle.

Their daughter Patty soon showed a passion for system design and sales. Tom, Barb, Patty and a great team of other folks have become the driving force of The Solar Biz. setting the bar for comfortable environmentally friendly living.

Being a pioneer and homesteader has many benefits .There are some drawbacks as well with addressing issues being one of them. Highway 180 is the closest paved road that connects us to Glenwood, NM and Alma, NM where both towns use the same zip code. Some tucking companies maintain we are in Alma, NM since it is closer to us then Glenwood, NM. It also seems that many shipping systems do not list our true address of "35 Whiterock Mountain Road" and that "35 White Rocks Rd" could work.
